MEN’S CINEMA by GQ Poland
Men’s Cinema by GQ Poland is a signature summer film series presenting contemporary auteur cinema and filmmakers who tell stories about relationships, emotions, identity, ambitions, and the modern world in a uniquely compelling way.
“Men’s” as understood by GQ does not mean genre-based filmmaking or a stereotypical view of masculinity. This is cinema about people, choices, loneliness, intimacy, memory, and the tensions of contemporary life.
The program features films by directors with a distinctive visual language and an auteur perspective: Jim Jarmusch, Paolo Sorrentino, Mariusz Wilczyński, and Park Chan-wook.
FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER
Age rating: 16+
“FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER” is the winner of the most recent Venice Film Festival and the best film in years from Jim Jarmusch, the director of “Paterson” and “Broken Flowers”. A precisely composed cinematic triptych, full of sharp observations, about family relationships and what causes us to drift apart from one another. Each of the three chapters is set in the present day, in a different country: FATHER – in the northeastern United States, MOTHER – in Dublin, and SISTER BROTHER – in Paris. Jarmusch’s film is a collection of subtle portraits of human characters, full of humor but also notes of melancholy. Starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Vicky Krieps, and Charlotte Rampling, among others.
The director himself describes his latest film this way: “FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER” is, in a sense, the antithesis of action cinema. Its restrained style was deliberately shaped to allow the viewer to notice small details — like three carefully arranged floral compositions. Collaboration with the outstanding cinematographers Frederick Elmes and Yorick Le Saux, the brilliant editor Affonso Gonçalves, and other regular collaborators allowed us to elevate what initially existed only as words on a page to the level of pure cinema.
