Katarzyna Sikorska. The Infinity of Coexistence

Katarzyna Sikorska’s paintings are extraordinary frames. The artist surprises with intimate formats, on which she depicts quasi-cosmic or even post-apocalyptic, boundless spaces. With her characteristic precision, she creates fragments of unknown worlds that, oddly enough, feel intuitively familiar. And yet, it is futile to search for organic forms or even somewhat recognizable landscapes in them.

The constructions, resembling fragments of concrete blocks or platforms, may evoke associations with military or post-industrial architecture, but they are not such. Similarly, the phenomena depicted in the skies—auroras, snowstorms, tempests, or meteors—are merely associations with the reality we know and one of the sources of artistic inspiration. Perhaps Sikorska’s paintings prophetically depict unknown areas of space or Earth in a distant, post-human, and non-organic future.

In the meticulously constructed futuristic landscapes, built with a gradation of color, light, and shadow, there are mute, small protagonists whose presence reveals the scale of the painted spaces created by the artist. These simple, barely perceptible geometric shapes—like wanderers—seem to traverse the futuristic deserts the artist has conjured. Whether this is accompanied by the silence of cosmic voids or some other unknown sounds is something we cannot be sure of. Senses, knowledge, and experiences—even those with art—seem to fail here, leading the viewer out of their cognitive comfort zone.

At the same time, in this uncertainty, a sense of closeness, harmony, and calm flickers. In this sense, Sikorska’s untitled canvases emerge as representations of a new, almost subconscious Arcadia—where practically everything is unknown, incomparable, inhuman, yet in its own way, safe. The peculiar “chords” of thoughtfully chosen artistic means briefly take us somewhere else—a world where light is both the guide and the only certainty.

Katarzyna Sikorska was born in 1997 in Częstochowa. She is a graduate of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. Her diploma work was awarded as the best painting diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław in 2022. In her painting, she explores the phenomena of light and shadow and their influence on space. She delves into posthumanist themes and creates her own post-apocalyptic vision of the world.
